Under the direction of the nurse manager, this role plans, directs, and evaluates the overall nursing care and operational functions of a nursing unit during an assigned shift. Coordinates the activities of the unit, including organizing, directing, and assigning work to the nursing staff. Assesses, monitors, and educates th! e nursing staff on patient care. Institutes emergency procedur! es as necessary. The incumbent must be familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a specified field of practice. Utilizes critical thinking skills to oversee the clinical and financial operations of the unit. Critical thinking, creativity, and ability to function appropriately given a certain degree of latitude is required. This position offers a career path to unit management.
Responsibilities:
- Ensures bed management system is updated and maintained according to guidelines during the shift. Maintains bed priority assignments and ensures up-to-date patient attributes. Works with case management to ensure discharge milestones updated, and works with providers and case managers to mitigate barriers to discharge.
- Directly responsible for adhering to staffing grids and monitoring financial performance of each shift, which includes resource utilization (HPPD and floating), minimizing agency usage, close supervision ord! ers and overtime utilization (with early in and late out).
- Monitors clinical performance and patient throughput of nursing unit for each shift, while working closely with resource, other inpatient units, house supervisors, and admitting office as patient flow issues are identified.
- Actively involved in maintaining a positive work environment and exceptional patient experience.
- Conducts coaching and disciplinary processes in absence of or in conjunction with nurse manager to align employee performance and behaviors.
- Participates in employee evaluation process.
- Maintains and fosters excellent physician relationships in the daily operations of the nursing unit.
- Performs professional staff nursing functions.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above.
- Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and process! es, in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ens! ure the smooth operation of the department.
- Knowledge of assigned departmentâs area of specialization in order to analyze, plan, and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors.
- Knowledge of time-keeping system, bed management system, and other productivity tools.
- Ability to provide care to the population served.
- Demonstrated ability to function calmly and competently in high stress situations.
Required
- Two years of clinical experience.
- Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card through American Heart Association or obtain within one month of hire.
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 30 days of hire under the interstate compact.
Preferred
- Clinical experience in an in-patient setting! .
- Some positions may require additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within one year of hire.
