Functioning under the direction of the Program Director and Principal Investigator, the Research Nurse will participate in data collection and review for a multi-site study designed to evaluate the impact of an intervention to improve handoffs of care between resident physicians. S/he will primarily assist in performing review of the medical record for the presence of medical errors and adverse events in the inpatient setting.

This is a 19 hour/week position (6 am to 10am, Mon - Thurs and 6 am to 9 am Fri) during the periods of data collection for the study (January through early March 2012 and then again from July through December 2012.) The time period from March until July will include time reviewing data and training resident during flexible daytime hours.

DUTIES

  • Identifies, documents and reports suspected medical errors and adverse events.
  • Distributes and collects completed post shift surveys and end of rotation surveys from resident physician subjects.
  • Collects information about suspected medical errors and adverse events from study unit staff (RNs, ancillary support staff, physicians).
  • Prepares case reports and source documentation for independent monitoring and audits.
  • Responds and completes data queries and clarifications.
  • Responsible for data validation and quality control.
  • Insures adherence to IRB guidelines and regulations.
  • Prepares weekly status reports for meetings and monitoring of database.
  • Meets weekly with Principal Investigators to review study progress.
  • Participates in professional meetings, continuing education and or formal academic programs.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
WORK SCHEDULE This is a 19 hour/week position (6 am to 10am, Mon - Thurs and 6 am to 9 am Fri) during the periods of data collection for the study (January through early March 2012 and then again from July through December 2012.)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • RN license in the state of Utah, plus two years direct clinical experience (five years preferred).
  • CCRP, ACRP-CRC, or SOCRA-CCRP certification. Three years research experience can be substituted for the required certification.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Meticulous and detail oriented concerning the collection and documentation of research data.
  • Excellent judgment skills and ability to interpret and follow protocol's requirements.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Possesses strong written and verbal presentation skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
PREFERENCES
  • Prior patient safety research experience preferred but not required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Access or other relational databases preferred
