The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner works collaboratively with the clinic manager, supervising physician a! nd other mid-level providers to provide a wide range of primary care services that encompass health promotion, injury and illness prevention, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of commonly encountered health problems and injuries, and monitoring of stable chronic health concerns. Clinic mid-level providers perform testing, refer to physicians as needed, write prescriptions, and perform office procedures within their scope of expertise as appropriate given clinic resources. These services are provided within a holistic, patient care-centered framework to patients of all ages.
Clinic mid-level providers must demonstrate consistent, sound judgment and the ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
Reporting Function
This position reports to the Clinic Manager and Medical Director.
Mid-level providers work under the general direction of the Clinic Manager/Medical Director/Supervising Physicians. A mid-level providerâs w! ork is reviewed from an overall standpoint in terms of meeting! objectives, effectiveness, and compliance with laws, regulation, policies and procedures.
Essential Functions
A clinic mid-level provider
Initiates, performs and directs medical assistants to perform screening and diagnostic tests, including blood draws, cultures, skin tests, pap smears, and other procedures appropriate for patientâs condition.
2. Performs routine laboratory work and other tests, and interprets results; or arranges for such procedures at other facilities.
3. Plans and oversees on-going treatment and clinical management of patients in stable phases of chronic illness, and general health maintenance of non-chronic, non acute patients.
4. Informs, counsels and instructs individuals and families on their specific health problems, test results, and health-related matters.
5. Prescribes medications according to proper clinical care and evidence based medicine.
6. Provides emergency medical! treatment when necessary.
7. Assisting in phlebotomy functions such as, starting and maintaining intravenous access to patient.
8. Assess symptoms and normal course of acute and chronic illnesses, and their treatment.
9. Apply procedures, techniques and tests for conducting comprehensive physical examinations.
10. Interprets standard laboratory tests, x-rays, and basic diagnostic procedures and techniques.
11. Assess substance abuse symptoms mental and emotional illness symptoms and apply intervention techniques.
12. Utilizes a wide variety of medications for medical conditions, while understands their effects, reactions and contraindications; proper handling and administration of medications.
13. Responsible for assessing of child and adult abuse and neglect, while implementing prevention programs and complying with reporting requirements.
14. Controls, detects, prevents, and treats common communicabl! e diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases.
15. Accur! ately evaluates and diagnose medical conditions, including obtaining and assessing medical histories.
16. Determines and assesses the health status of patients by reviewing records, taking comprehensive medical histories, and performing physical examinations; and records findings.
17. Prepares and maintains complete and accurate charts, case files, records and other documents; reviews material prepared by other staff for completeness and accuracy.
18. Complete required documentation and required written follow-up.
19. Responsible for standard medical record-keeping and HIPAA requirements.
20. Recognizes situations requiring physician care.
21. Applies knowledge of state laws and regulations on physician assistant and nurse practitioner scope of work; responsibilities, professional principles, procedures and techniques of physician assistants and nurse practitioners, as applicable within specific licensure.
22. A! pply knowledge of Family Planning methods and medical and health care for pregnant women.
23. Apply knowledge of normal growth and development, and common illnesses of infants and children.
24. Utilizes community resources for medical care, mental health care and social services.
25. Recognizes and takes immediate action in emergency and immediate need medical cases.
26. Acts as a clinical consultant to medical, medical assistants and paramedical personnel.
27. Consults with physicians regarding patientâs conditions, diagnosis, treatment plan, medication orders and need for specialty care as needed; keeps physician advised of patient status as necessary.
28. Consults with specialists as needed.
29. Works independently and applies sound medical judgment, treatment planning and referral to physicians.
30. Attends, participates in, and contributes to in-services education and staff training sessions to m! aintain and increase skills, and to teach others.
31. Maintain! s CME requirements for certification.
32. Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
Education/Credentials required
- Graduated from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program
- Must have maintained certifications/credentialing as a PA/FNP
- Must have active license to practice in the state where the provider currently resides
- Must obtain State of Utah provider (PA/FNP) license through the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing within 60 days from hire date
Education/Credentials preferred
Masterâs degree from an accredited Physician Assistant or Family Nurse Practitioner program.
Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification (ACLS).
Experience/skills required
Clinical experience in a family practice, pediatrics, urgent care, womenâs health, and/or mental healt! h settings.
Experience/skills preferred
Three years of experience working in a family practice clinic setting.
Flexibility to work schedule with possible weekend and on-call coverage.
Physical and other requirements
- Knowledge of normal and abnormal family dynamics; differing cultural, religious, social, and economic factors affecting community medical care patients.
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients from various social, cultural and economic and educational backgrounds.
- Ability to effectively intervene in cases of mental illness, substance abuse and adult/child abuse and neglect.
- Ability to gain the confidence of patients in treating communicable and environmentally-based illnesses.
- Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality.
- Regular and reliable attendance.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to work cooperatively with other medical ! care providers.
- Ability to work long hours as needed.
- Must be able to sit and/or stand for extensive periods of time.
- Fine motor coordination.
- Mobility.
- Must be able to work long hours as needed; seeing usually 20+ patients per day.
